Elder Scrolls Online Breton Racial Skills, Builds & History
Background of The Bretons:
The Bretons come from High Rock province and have a unique and diverse culture. They are the descendants of unions between Aldmeri settlers and some of the early tribes of man they held as slaves, tending to be a bit shorter and thinner than Imperials. This ancestry can sometimes be seen up close, but mostly they look like a dark-haired Man race. Their slight stature lends itself well to the Light Armor skill line, and they advance in mastery over it more quickly than most. Most live in walled or fortified villages, although the wealthiest live in castles. They have a feudal agrarian society but greatly value trade, and a love for scholarly knowledge and intellectual learning that serves them well in many types of occupations. The proficiency they are best known for is with many different types of magic, which they inherited from their Aldmeri ancestors. These skills make them some of the most efficient mages in Tamriel, but even the lowest peasant with no training in magic has a very high magic resistance to destructive or compelling magics. Many of the famous sorcerers and battlemages of Tamriel were born here, as were several of the Emperors throughout the Eras. Expressive, humorous and intelligent, they are culturally united although politically and economically their people are anything but. They accept the Nine Divines but are considered to be a bit secular and more well-reasoned in their beliefs. The province itself is known for good, fertile farmland with a mildly temperate climate.
Breton Racial History:
A hybrid of Aldmeri and Nethic tribesmen, the Bretons were originally a servant class and slaves to the Aldmer, until an attack on the elves by Ysgramor and the Five Hundred Companions called the Night of Tears drove them out. Although their hold was broken, the Aldmer would remain in High Rock until the end of the First Era. The Bretons eventually controlled the whole province as a people, but their politically competitive natures caused them to form several smaller states instead of a larger, more powerful one. Clan Direnni united these smaller city-states and kingdoms, but they fell apart again with the fall of the First Empire.
High King Emeric was a merchant prince from High Rock. When the Ruby Throne fell, valuable trade was disrupted. By cementing an alliance with the Redguards of Hammerfell and the Orcs of Orsinium, he gained the trust of his own fractious people, and was elected High King.
“Our supplies dwindle. Our trade routes shut down. Our people suffer. Why? Because a pretender sits upon the Ruby Throne. Let us take up arms! Let the fields of Cyrodiil run red with the blood of our fallen enemies! But let us spare the lives of a few, so that they may return to their homelands to tell their fellows the fate they met at the hands of the Daggerfall Covenant! One Land! One Emperor! Who among you will stand with me?” ―High King Emeric’s Call to Arms
