Elder Scrolls Online Dunmer Racial Skills, Builds & History
The Dark Elves, more formally known as Dunmer, come from the province of Morrowind in northeastern Tamriel. The land itself is filled with exotic creatures and plants, along with many Dwemer ruins and the famous Red Mountain, where they were cursed by Azura with their present appearances. Intelligent, agile and reserved, they are known for having talents with various fire magics, and are known to go into professions like Dark Brotherhood or Mages Guild work, trading or thievery. They possess long lifespans, even for an elven race, and are just shorter than the average Altmer. Their eyes can be reddish-toned, which along with their range of dark or even bluish skin tones are results of the will of Azura, following the Ascension of the Dunmeri Tribunal to godhood status. At the Second Battle of Red Mountain in the Year 700 of the First Era, it is said that Sotha Sil, Almalexia and Vivec found (and stole power from) the heart of the dead god Lorkhan. Azura cursed them and the race with their look because the elves broke an oath not to steal divine power. Most do not follow the Divines, but rather the Tribunal and some of the “good” daedra (although Molag Bal is the archenemy of the Tribunal and the Dark Elves). Some of the Dunmer know as Ashlanders live in the Morrowind Wastelands and live a nomadic existence, with skills for hunting and a disdain for the soft city lives of the Elves of the Houses. All Dunmer tend to be grim and aloof, and a bit mistrusting of other races, but highly skilled with various forms of magic. They put up with this Alliance with the rest of the Ebonheart Pact because it allows them to stand up to the rest of Tamriel, and have been skilled as a people on the whole in maintaining their independence from the Empire and cohesion after its fall.
History of the Dark Elves:
At the beginning of the First Era, when the Aldmer ruled Tamriel, a group of them decided to worship the Daedra instead of the Eight (at the time) Divines. Renamed the Chimer this group followed the Prophet Veloth into the province of Morrowind, away from the other Aldmeri, and discovered a race inhabiting the island of Vvardenfell: the Dwemer. As Boethiah had told them the land was theirs, they fought against the various technologies and automatons of the Dwemer, but this fighting weakened them both and allowed the Nords to conquer them in the Year 240 of the First Era. Suppressed and dominated by the Nords, the Dwemer and the Dark Elves finally banded together in the Year 401 in rebellion against them, and in the Year 416 defeated the Nords at the 1st Battle of Red Mountain. The leaders of the Dwemer and the Chimer were Dumac and Nerevar, along with four advisors: Sotha Sil, Vivec, Almalexia and Voryn of House Dagoth. When the heart of the dead god Lorkhan was discovered in the Year 688, the Dwemer sought to use it to power an artificial god-like being named Numidium. The nation they founded, Resdayn, split apart, and the Dwemer were finally defeated at the Second Battle of Red Mountain. Right at the conclusion of it, the Dwemer vanished entirely from Nirn, and some said it was due to Voryn being struck insane in the attempt to put the Heart into Numidium. Nerevar was struck down in battle with him, and the Tribunal sealed him and the Heart into Red Mountain, drawing power from it yearly to maintain their powers and immortality.
Dunmer and the Land of Morrowind
Azura then cursed them and their people, the Dunmer, and the Tribunal took over Morrowind with a theocratic rule/religion named Almsivi. The freedom of the Morrowind province was to last well over 2,000 years, until the Akiviri invaded the continent. Initially, the Dunmer aided the young Cyrodilic Empire in driving back the invaders, but after they were repulsed the Empire eventually conquered every province but Morrowind. The Four-Score War lasted eighty years; just as the Dark Elves were about to capitulate the Emperor was assassinated and the Empire taken over by his advisor, an Akaviri named Versidue-Shaie. As Morrowind wasn’t part of the Empire itself at this point, it escaped much of the chaos from the fallout. The Akaviri Potentate who assassinated the Emperor declared a new Era, but had his hands full trying to consolidate his power, and Morrowind was left alone. Over 400 years later in the Year 430 of the Second Era, the death of the Second Potentate caused a collapse of the Empire, leading to the Interregnum and the fight for the Ruby Throne. The Dark Elves view the Ebonheart Pact as a necessity for fending off the other two Alliances and the Imperials, to help them confront Molag Bal and destroy his plans for Nirn. Dunmer are members of The Ebonheart Pact and the starting area is Bleakrock.
